Neste livro, estamos muito mais interessados nos métodos de baixo nível que se destinam a todos os estudantes que pretendam familiarizar-se com o domínio do processamento e análise de imagens e da visão na formação universitária (Licenciatura ou Mestrado). Para tal, o documento foi organizado em sete capítulos que vão desde o sistema de visão humana, formação e aquisição da imagem por sensores (Capítulo I), sendo posteriormente apresentadas no Capítulo II as definições de palavras-chave gerais utilizadas no mundo das imagens digitais, histogramas e sua manipulação e efeitos sobre as imagens.No Capítulo III, são apresentadas com pormenor as noções fundamentais de formação, armazenamento e representação de cores das imagens. De seguida, no Capítulo IV, são apresentados os conceitos mais importantes de amostragem e quantificação de imagens.No Capítulo V, encontramos métodos de filtragem linear espacial e de frequência com alguns tipos de filtros muito populares. O Capítulo VI contém uma descrição de alguns métodos de deteção de contornos baseados na primeira e segunda derivadas. No final, e no capítulo VII, é feita uma pequena introdução ao domínio da segmentação de imagens.
