El objetivo de la información ampliamente tratada en este libro es para evaluar y analizar los diferentes tipos de tratamientos fisicoquímicos para las aguas ya que el abastecimiento de agua y el desalojo de aguas residuales en las poblaciones han sido, a lo largo de la historia, una de las grandes preocupaciones de la humanidad. Las primeras comunidades agrícolas se establecieron alrededor de ríos o lagos, posteriormente las ciudades se fundaron junto a ellas y desde entonces y hasta la fecha, la preocupación de abastecerse de agua de buena calidad ha sido constante. Una de las áreas de estudio más importantes de la ingeniería sanitaria se relaciona con el tratamiento de las aguas: ya sea las llamadas aguas claras para consumo humano o las aguas residuales. En ambos casos se tiene agua de cierta calidad que se desea acondicionar, generalmente remover algunos constituyentes indeseables.
