L’assistenza istituzionale è 'una sistemazione di gruppo per più di dieci bambini, senza genitori o genitori surrogati, in cui l’assistenza è fornita da un numero molto inferiore di assistenti adulti retribuiti' (Browne, 2009). Browne (2009) ha affermato che 'l’assistenza residenziale implica una struttura organizzata, routinaria e impersonale per le modalità di vita dei bambini (ad esempio, tutti i bambini dormono, mangiano e fanno i bisognini nello stesso momento) e una relazione professionale, piuttosto che parentale, tra gli adulti e i bambini'. Un bambino può essere considerato in regime di assistenza istituzionale o si dice che è istituzionalizzato se è stato in assistenza istituzionale per più di tre mesi. Questi bambini hanno bisogno di sostegno emotivo o di bisogni psicologici come cura, amore, affetto, protezione, attenzione, sicurezza, attaccamento e vogliono essere lodati e premiati. Hanno subito eventi stressanti o traumi nella loro vita, come la perdita dei genitori, abusi, negligenza e povertà. Questo li rende emotivamente repressi e li fa ritirare dalle attività sociali. Per questo motivo è stato intrapreso questo studio.
