Das Buch gibt neue Anstöße für eine medienethische und qualitätsorientierte Debatte über das Private in den Medien. Die bislang vorwiegend theoretisch formulierten Konzepte der gender studies zu Öffentlichkeit und Privatheit werden auf die alltägliche journalistische Praxis bezogen. In diesem Kontext erscheint ein am Individuum orientierter Begriff der Scham für medienethische Überlegungen geeigneter als der historisch überfrachtete Begriff der Privatheit. Auf der Grundlage eines neuen Begriffs von Privatheit untersucht dieses Buch beispielhaft vier Daily Talks zum Thema Bisexualität und entwickelt qualitative Kriterien für private Themen in den Medien. Insbesondere werden die Begriffe der Emotionalisierung und Personalisierung einer kritischen Revision unterzogen.
