Principles of Ethics, Rosmini’s first great work in the field of moral philosophy, looks to the light of reason as the objective basis of moral action. The subjective foundation of such action is the act of will by which we accept what the light of reason places before us. “Acknowledge what you know for what you know it to be” thus becomes the ultimate, self-evident expression of moral obligation. To acknowledge willingly what in fact we know is the essence of morality.Rosmini’s moral theory depends upon a thorough examination of the objective nature of knowledge (already carried out in his New Essay), and on a careful analysis of human volition and freedom. Within the system of truth both the simple, straightforward beauty of moral good in the human person and the duplicity of evil become immediately obvious. It is also clear that willing acceptance of moral imperatives does not diminish, but enhances innate human dignity. Moral law, rational law and natural law indicate a single, inviolable source of obligation present to human nature under different aspects. 3

  • Aquinas, Ethics, and Philosophy of Religion
    Thomas Hibbs
In Aquinas, Ethics, and Philosophy of Religion, Thomas Hibbs recovers the notion of practice to develop a more descriptive account of human action and knowing, grounded in the venerable vocabulary of virtue and vice. Drawing on Aquinas, who believed that all good works originate from virtue, Hibbs postulates how epistemology, ethics, metaphysics, and theology combine into a set...

  • Kant
    Immanuel Kant
Kant’s Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals is one of the most important works in modern moral philosophy. It belongs beside Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli, and Hobbes. Here Kant sets out to articulate and defend the Categorical Imperative - the fundamental principle that underlies moral reasoning - and to lay the foundation for a comprehensive account of justice and human vi...

  • On the Duty of Civil Disobedience
    HENRY DAVID THOREAU
Civil Disobedience argues that citizens should not permit their governments to overrule their consciences, and that they have a duty to avoid allowing their acquiescence to enable the government to make them the agents of injustice. Thoreau was motivated in part by his disgust with slavery and the Mexican-American War, but the sentiments he expresses here are just as pertinent ...

  • Beyond Good and Evil
    Friedrich Nietzsche
Nietzsche, though primarily a philosopher, wrote widely on art, philology, history, religion, tragedy, culture, and science.  In 1886, at the height of his powers, he published Beyond Good and Evil.  Here he examines much of the best of human thought--dogmatic philosophy, Judeo-Christian morality, science and democracy – and finds it lacking.  Rejecting “slave-morality” he pres...

  • CONSCIENCE
BLESSED ANTONIO ROSMINI / Catholic Life International / Dominick Pepito
In Conscience, Rosmini brings to their final conclusion the moral principles developed in his earlier Principles of Ethics. Approaching the study from a rational point of view, he also draws upon theology’s contribution to clarify and reinforce reason’s deliberations on the subject. In this way, he reaches out to believers and non-believers, all of whom, irrespective of their r...

BLESSED ANTONIO ROSMINI / Catholic Life International / Dominick Pepito
Love is one, but it can be expressed in three different modes: practical love, intellectual love, and spiritual love. Helping the poor, providing for the sick, taking care of the blind are ways of loving practically; taking care of the spiritual welfare of our neighbour by means of prayer, of the Sacraments, by real concern for the salvation of their soul are ways of loving spi...
  • The WORD Who Is LIFE
BLESSED ANTONIO ROSMINI / Catholic Life International / Dominick Pepito
Rosmini is acknowledged as a great Christian philosopher, original and daring in his teaching, and utterly convincing. He is less known as a theologian, mainly because nearly all his theological works have been published after his death, having been left unfinished by the author. Yet, they are truly outstanding and precious, in line with the writings of the great Fathers of the...

He had in mind, for the complete ‘Collection’ of his works, a section entitled ‘The philosophy of supernatural things’. He wanted to con- struct a philosophy which, foll...
