A investigação relatou uma epidemia de VIH/SIDA nas comunidades surdas em todo o mundo. O projeto VCT da NYAWERI em Kisumu, Quénia, foi criado em 2003 para responder às necessidades da comunidade surda no que diz respeito à prevenção do VIH/SIDA na região ocidental e do Vale do Rift. Quatro anos mais tarde, o projeto foi avaliado quanto ao seu impacto na comunidade. O relatório revelou uma grande mudança, uma vez que os membros da comunidade surda indicaram ter consciência das estratégias preventivas, tais como evitar relações sexuais com pessoas infectadas e sexo não seguro. Os membros do pessoal da NYAWERI foram considerados eficazes no seu trabalho e o estudo revelou o desenvolvimento de uma atitude positiva em relação à aceitação do ATV entre os inquiridos. A partir dos resultados, parece não ter havido factores especiais que influenciassem a escolha de estratégias de intervenção específicas com base nas perspectivas dos inquiridos. De um modo geral, houve provas claras de mudança de comportamento.
