Niniejsze badanie koncentruje się na czytaniu w szkole średniej. Jego celem było zweryfikowanie związku między wynikami w języku portugalskim, zmiennymi socjodemograficznymi i praktykami czytelniczymi uczniów płci męskiej i żeńskiej regularnie uczęszczających do szkoły średniej. Czytanie jest również rozumiane jako proces kulturowy, w którym „znaczenie tekstów zależy od możliwości, konwencji i praktyk czytelniczych społeczności, które tworzą, synchronicznie lub diachronicznie, ich różnych odbiorców' (Chartier, 2009, s. 37). Czytanie jest uważane za proces interakcji, w którym istnieje znaczenie dla zrozumienia między autorem a czytelnikiem. Aspektów związanych z czytaniem można nauczyć się nie tylko z tekstów szkolnych, ale także jako formy rozrywki (Gouveia, 2009).
