La grande diversité des espèces végétales du biome brésilien du cerrado souligne le grand potentiel de molécules biologiquement actives. Cependant, au cours des 40 dernières années, ce biome s’est dégradé, principalement en raison de l’expansion croissante des activités agricoles et de la construction de barrages hydroélectriques, entre autres. En plus de provoquer des changements écologiques irréparables, cette situation a également entraîné une augmentation du nombre d’animaux sauvages dans les zones urbaines, tels que les animaux venimeux, ce qui a créé un grave problème de santé publique. Les envenimations causées par les serpents venimeux se caractérisent par une physiopathologie complexe qui va des effets locaux aux altérations systémiques. Dans ce contexte, la phytothérapie antivenimeuse se distingue en tant que cible de la recherche de substances alternatives pour le traitement antivenimeux. L’espèce G. glaucescens a été sélectionnée sur la base d’une étude ethnobotanique fondée sur les connaissances empiriques des guérisseurs appartenant à la communauté noire de Barra D’Aroeira, dans l’État de Tocantins. L’objectif de cette étude était d’évaluer in vitro l’effet antiophidique de l’extrait éthanolique de G. glaucescens sur des préparations neuromusculaires chez la souris.
