A promoção dos produtos locais responde a uma necessidade crescente de realçar as diferenças e as identidades das partes interessadas. Analisámos as oportunidades oferecidas pela indicação geográfica do ananás Pão de Açúcar do planalto de Allada, no Benim, num mundo cada vez mais globalizado. A questão do potencial económico e social da IG do Sugar Loaf Pineapple foi abordada com base na teoria do bem comum e na teoria da categorização cognitiva. Foi utilizada uma abordagem metodológica que incluiu pesquisa documental e entrevistas com um questionário aplicado a 500 pessoas no planalto de Allada. Os dados recolhidos foram tratados com recurso ao software SPSS para fundamentar a informação obtida. Os resultados da análise mostram que os intervenientes foram bem formados no processo de registo da IG do ananás. A indicação geográfica é um meio de dar a conhecer o fruto nos mercados mundiais e de contribuir para a riqueza do terroir. O produto local beninense 'Ananas Pain de sucre' passa a ser identificado por um novo sinal distintivo na sua embalagem.
