Badanie to zostało przeprowadzone w celu zweryfikowania wiedzy uczniów szkół średnich w szkole Manuel de Matos w gminie Santana do Mundaú, AL, na temat cech lokalnej rzeźby terenu, skoncentrowanej w regionie doliny w mikroregionie górskim Quilombos. Oprócz ankiety bibliograficznej, kwestionariusze zostały rozdane 135 uczniom z popołudniowej i wieczornej zmiany. Znaczna liczba studentów, zwłaszcza tych z wieczornej zmiany, nie była w stanie zidentyfikować cech geograficznych swojej gminy i regionu, podczas gdy ci z popołudniowej zmiany radzili sobie lepiej. W związku z tym konieczna jest zmiana praktyk nauczania stosowanych przez nauczycieli, zwłaszcza w szkole podstawowej, gdzie dominujące wykorzystanie podręczników jest głównym sposobem przekazywania wiedzy, bez uwzględnienia rzeczywistych priorytetów rozwoju intelektualnego ucznia. Taka rzeczywistość charakteryzuje nauczanie geografii w stanie Alagoas, gdzie nadal istnieją bardzo prymitywne sposoby prezentacji przedmiotu, zwłaszcza w szkołach państwowych.
