O principal objetivo deste estudo é fazer uma análise abrangente da questão 'Por que existe algo em vez de nada?', que é uma das principais questões da metafísica, e encontrar uma resposta plausível no final, se possível. Para iniciar esta análise, é necessário primeiro esclarecer o que entendemos por esta questão. Para o esclarecimento, será procurada uma definição de nada. Posteriormente, será investigada a motivação para fazermos esta pergunta, o seu significado e o seu conteúdo. Esta investigação irá ajudar-nos a concentrar-nos e a discutir, no âmbito da causalidade e da necessidade, a nossa compreensão de seres contingentes e nada. Até agora, duas abordagens principais procuraram responder a esta questão: a dos teístas e a dos físicos. Essas abordagens serão discutidas e comparadas. E, no final da análise comparativa dessas duas abordagens, será procurada uma abordagem metafísica que será uma camada delas.
