Das polyzystische Ovarialsyndrom (PCOS) ist eine der Hauptursachen für weibliche Unfruchtbarkeit. 5-10 % der Frauen im gebärfähigen Alter sind davon betroffen. Unregelmäßiger Menstruationszyklus, Insulinresistenz und Fettleibigkeit sind die wichtigsten Faktoren, die mit PCOS in Verbindung gebracht werden. Die Beziehung zwischen verschiedenen klinischen Parametern und PCOS wird eingehend untersucht. Es werden verschiedene hormonelle Anomalien wie die Werte des luteinisierenden Hormons, des follikelstimulierenden Hormons, des Prolaktins, des Testosterons und des Östrogens analysiert. Die Lipidparameter wie Lipoprotein niedriger Dichte, Lipoprotein hoher Dichte, Lipoprotein sehr niedriger Dichte und Gesamtcholesterin werden ebenso untersucht wie Insulin, Blutzucker und Glukosebelastungstest. Dieses Buch beleuchtet den diagnostischen Nutzen verschiedener biochemischer Parameter und die Rolle von Metformin als Insulinsensibilisator bei der Behandlung von PCOS.
