La politica etiope sulle lingue di insegnamento permette ora l’uso di molte lingue diverse nelle scuole primarie. Questo studio analizza l’interazione tra i cambiamenti socio-politici in una società diversificata, la pianificazione linguistica e la formazione dell’identità di gruppo. Mette a confronto i modi in cui il cambiamento della politica educativa etiope ha avuto un impatto sulle identità sociali di due gruppi etnici: i Gumuz e gli Shinasha del Benishangul Gumuz Regional State. 'La nostra lingua nascosta sarà visibile per il futuro', dice un padre Shinasha. Un anziano Gumuz afferma che 'iniziare con la nostra lingua madre è positivo.
