Andy Räder untersucht erstmals alle Regiearbeiten des beliebten DEFA-Schauspielers Ulrich Thein (1930-1995) für das Fernsehen der DDR. Er weist nach, dass Thein mit seinen acht Fernsehfilmen und Mehrteilern als einer der bedeutendsten Protagonisten der DDR-Television der 1960er und 1970er Jahre angesehen werden kann. Er prägte den Programmbereich der Fernsehdramatik und setzte wichtige Akzente in der Programmentwicklung. Der Autor nutzt für seine Analysen einen ganzheitlichen Forschungsansatz, der mithilfe der theoretischen und methodologischen Überlegungen zur Historischen Pragmatik des Fernsehdramatischen und zur Historischen Poetik des Neoformalismus das Verhältnis von Fernsehtext, Akteuren, institutionellen Strukturen, politischer Lenkung und Kontrolle sowie Zuschauerinteresse medienhistorisch neu beleuchtet.
