A regulação da plasticidade no Sistema Nervoso Central (SNC) adulto é um mecanismo complexo no qual sinais promotores e inibidores do crescimento provenientes dos neurónios e de estímulos locais são cuidadosamente ajustados para conferir potencialidades plásticas específicas. Este equilíbrio também é influenciado pelo mundo exterior, que atua tanto sobre as potencialidades intrínsecas como sobre os estímulos extrínsecos para aumentar as capacidades plásticas onde necessário. A investigação apresentada neste livro sugere um modelo de interação triádica entre o mundo externo, as potencialidades intrínsecas de crescimento neuronal e os mecanismos extrínsecos de regulação do crescimento. O resultado global é uma modulação fina da plasticidade neuronal, que permite a adaptação do SNC adulto ao ambiente em mudança. A análise aprofundada dos genes associados ao crescimento, dos recetores de mielina, das redes perineuronais e das suas manipulações experimentais tornam este livro particularmente útil para estudantes universitários.
