In einer anderen Kultur zu leben bedeutet nicht nur, fern der eigenen Heimat zu leben, sondern in eine andere symbolische Welt einzutauchen. Durch das Leben fern meiner Heimat habe ich erkannt, dass Kultur nicht durch einen rationalen Diskurs von einem Tag oder einem Jahr beeinflusst wird und dass es Zeit und Geduld braucht, um mit dem anderen in einen Dialog zu treten. Man kann den anderen nur verstehen, wenn man geduldig das Puzzle seiner jahrtausendealten Geschichte zusammensetzt. Ich glaube, dass weder Assimilation noch Integration zum Aufbau eines neuen Zusammenlebens führen können, wenn die Kulturen nicht bewusst Anstrengungen im Sinne eines intrakulturellen Dialogs, der Bewusstwerdung und der internen Kritik unternehmen, bevor sie sich auf den interkulturellen Dialog einlassen. Ohne eine Selbstreflexion jedes Einzelnen, um dem anderen auf einem gemeinsamen menschlichen Boden zu begegnen, können alle Modelle des interkulturellen Zusammenlebens nur scheitern.
