Die Expression von Impfstoffantigenen über den Chloroplasten bietet zahlreiche Vorteile. Umweltfreundlichkeit, die Möglichkeit der Expression mehrerer Transgene, die Präzision der Transgenintegration und das Fehlen epigenetischer Effekte sind die Hauptvorteile der Plastidentransformation. Aufgrund wirtschaftlicher Beschränkungen bei der Verfügbarkeit von Impfstoffen gegen Infektionskrankheiten ist es notwendig, verbesserte Impfstoffe zu entwickeln, die effizienter und kostengünstiger sind und somit für die meisten Patienten in ressourcenarmen Ländern leicht erschwinglich sind.
