The opinions of armchair philosophers, to whom life is in black and white, are not often taken seriously, probably, because they are, often, too loudly expressed or, irritatingly, argumentative. These opinions arise, however, from social concern and from exasperation at the apparent lack of concern, by the rest of the population, about serious matters of human existence. Some armchair philosophers have, consequently, given up the world as mad or stupid and will turn to the sports, rather than read the news or opinion, pages of newspapers. Many issues of concern to armchair philosophers, however, deserve greater attention and reflection by the rest of us. In this book, the opinions, of an armchair philosopher, on cultural, social, economic and political issues, which trouble individuals, Western civilization, the continent of Africa, and two countries, Nigeria and the United Kingdom, are discussed.

  • MR GOODMAN AND OTHER POEMS

Growing up, in the 1960s Nigeria, was idyllic. Young Nigerians, who made the fashionable choice 'to seek the golden fleece' by pursuing tertiary education in Europe, met with what they had not bargained for. In their late teens and armed only with a highly romanticised but dated English grammar school education and Christian manners, they discovered that Europe was not what the...
  • A SHORT HISTORY OF THE DELIBERATE KILLING OF CHILDREN (Born and Unborn)
    Benedict Nnolim
Every age believes it is more civilised than earlier ones. It abhors, as barbaric, the cruelties of preceding ages while, at the same time, justifying its own cruelties using current, fashionable logic. Modern democracy claims to have overcome the tyrannies of kings and dictators. Yet it is, actually, run by tyrannies; that of the 'majority' at best but, more usually, that of t...
