Este estudo aborda a riqueza cultural da comunidade indígena de Salasaka, em Tungurahua, Equador. Partindo do nó problemático relacionado com o desperdício de recursos culturais e com os baixos níveis de produtividade, a investigação orienta-se para a análise do modo como os costumes e as tradições influenciam a construção de experiências turísticas significativas. A investigação, de carácter transversal e baseada na teoria crítica e descritiva, assentou num rigoroso trabalho de campo com instrumentos validados pelo Instituto Nacional do Património Cultural. Através de uma análise qualitativa baseada na dialética e na hermenêutica do turismo, revelou-se que o património vivo de Salasaka é vasto, com uma forte ancoragem na natureza e na cosmovisão andina. Os resultados mostram que as práticas culturais e os saberes ancestrais podem tornar-se eixos dinâmicos do turismo de experiência, desde que os portadores desses saberes sejam reconhecidos como protagonistas das iniciativas económicas.
