En un principio la Historia Atlántica se limitaba al estudio de las relaciones del Atlántico Norte, entre Europa y Norteamérica. Sin embargo, la incorporación a esa Historia de los imperios ibéricos y más recientemente de África ha enriquecido enormemente el concepto. Una de las vinculaciones más fructíferas de esos lazos ha sido sin duda el patrimonio y en concreto el cultural africano atlántico y de la afrodescendencia. Si durante la colonización de África se consideró que este continente carecía de Historia, la concreción de un patrimonio cultural a valorizar era prácticamente inexistente. A pesar de ello, en los últimos años se ha puesto el foco en la riqueza del patrimonio cultural tangible e intangible de la población africana, en su número y su diversidad, en su aportación no solo a los pueblos africanos sino a la humanidad. Esta nueva dimensión ha crecido con el papel del patrimonio de la afrodescendencia en América y con las conexiones que existieron en una y otra orilla atlántica, en este caso sur-sur. En este contexto, los espacios insulares africanos atlánticos, y también los americanos, fueron puntos de confluencia y de mestizaje, a las vez que puertas por las que entraba y salía la cultura africana y sus manifestaciones patrimoniales. A lo largo del tiempo en estos espacios geográficos se han ido configurando unos bienes, que a pesar de estar ocultos o de ser ocultados, tratamos de localizarlos y ponerlos en valor en esta edición.
