Il fagiolo mungo (Vigna radiata L.) è un’importante coltura da legume, apprezzata per l’elevato contenuto proteico, il breve ciclo vegetativo e la capacità di migliorare la fertilità del suolo attraverso la fissazione dell’azoto. Tuttavia, la sua produttività è spesso ridotta dall’attacco di insetti succhiatori, che causano danni diretti nutrendosi della linfa delle piante e danni indiretti attraverso la trasmissione di malattie vegetali. Tra i principali insetti succhiatori del fagiolo mungo figurano la mosca bianca (Bemisia tabaci), il cicalino (Empoasca kerri), l’afide (Aphis craccivora) e il tripide (Megalurothrips usitatus).La presenza e l’abbondanza di questi parassiti variano a seconda delle fasi di crescita della coltura e delle condizioni ambientali. In genere, i parassiti succhiatori iniziano a comparire durante la fase vegetativa e raggiungono il picco di popolazione durante la fioritura e la formazione dei baccelli. La temperatura, l’umidità relativa e le precipitazioni giocano un ruolo significativo nel determinare la loro incidenza stagionale. La mosca bianca è uno dei parassiti più distruttivi del fagiolo mungo. Sia le ninfe che gli adulti succhiano la linfa dalle foglie, causando ingiallimento, arricciamento e riduzione del vigore della pianta. Ancora più importante, le mosche bianche trasmettono il virus del mosaico giallo del fagiolo mungo (MYMV), una grave malattia che può causare gravi perdite di resa.
