La palma da foraggio gigante (Opuntia ficus indica) è una cactacea con un elevato potenziale di sfruttamento a livello mondiale e un’importante fonte di foraggio durante i periodi di siccità nelle regioni semiaride. Questo studio ha dimostrato la fattibilità della pianta per la crioconservazione dello sperma dei pesci. È stata effettuata una revisione della letteratura sulle principali biotecnologie utilizzate per la conservazione dei gameti, nonché esperimenti di crioconservazione e analisi morfologica computerizzata dello sperma del pesce Prochilodus brevis. Lo sperma dell’animale è stato diluito in una soluzione di palma gigante da foraggio liofilizzata (ELPF) e confrontato con soluzioni di acqua di cocco in polvere (ACP-104) e glucosio al 5%. Il prodotto testato ha mostrato un elevato potenziale di utilizzo nei programmi di riproduzione assistita.
