Pahla Patthar (The First Stone) is a finely curated collection of nine short stories by Balwant Singh - one of Urdu fiction’s most perceptive realists. Rooted in the soil of Punjab, these stories capture the raw essence of rural life, the anguish of Partition, and the delicate play of human emotions. Balwant Singh’s writing is at once simple and profound - weaving everyday experiences with moral reflection and quiet symbolism. His characters breathe, err, repent, and love with striking honesty. Through these tales, the author reminds us that even in an age of division and despair, compassion and truth endure. This volume celebrates a storyteller who turned the ordinary into the timeless, and the local into the universal./پہلا پتھر بلونت سنگھ کے نو منتخب افسانوں کا ایسا مجموعہ ہے جو پنجاب کی مٹی، انسان کی سچائی، اور زندگی کے تلخ و میٹھے پہلوؤں کو بڑی سادگی اور فنی گہرائی کے ساتھ مجسم کرتا ہے۔ ان کہانیوں میں دیہات کے دھول بھرے راستے، تقسیم ہند کے زخم، اور انسان کے اندر چھپے اخلاقی تضادات ایک ساتھ جلوہ گر ہیں۔ بلونت سنگھ کا اسلوب سادہ مگر معنی خیز ہے؛ ان کی نثر میں دیہی تجربے کی خوشبو، حقیقت نگاری کی چمک اور علامتی گہرائی کا امتزاج ملتا ہے۔ یہ کتاب اردو فکشن میں انسان دوستی، ہمدردی، اور سچائی کے ابدی جذبے کی گواہی ہے - ایک ایسا تخلیقی آئینہ، جس میں ہم اپنی تہذیب، اپنی انسانیت اور اپنے عہد کو پہچان سکتے ہیں۔
