Inflammation is a complex biological tissue response to injury or noxious stimulus. It usually operates effectively to remove dead tissue and microbes. It is an essential immune response that enables survival during infection or injury and maintains tissue homeostasis. This complex response involves inflammatory cells that release mediators to prevent further tissue damage and ultimately result in healing and restoration of tissue function. The inflammatory process must be tightly regulated to prevent harm to the body it is designed to protect.
