Nel settore dell’elettronica la domanda di miglioramento tecnologico è in costante aumento. Fino ad ora, il silicio è stato il materiale più popolare per soddisfare le attuali richieste. Tuttavia, il silicio ha i suoi limiti; I circuiti integrati a base di silicio e la scalabilità della progettazione dei MOSFET in silicio affrontano problemi come l’effetto tunnel, l’impatto sullo spessore dell’ossido di gate e così via, che ha spinto allo sviluppo di materiali alternativi. Il crescente interesse accademico per i nanotubi di carbonio (CNT) come possibile nuovo tipo di materiale elettronico ha portato a progressi sostanziali nella fisica dei CNT, comprese le proprietà balistiche e non balistiche di trasporto degli elettroni.
