Nico Grunze untersucht die vielgestaltigen Entwicklungen der ostdeutschen Großwohnsiedlungen, die die Städte seit dem Wohnungsbauprogramm der DDR prägen. Dazu ermittelt er die Grundgesamtheit von Neubaugebieten mit einer Größe von mindestens 2.500 Wohnungen und geht der Frage nach, welche Großwohnsiedlungstypen sich bei der Betrachtung der jeweiligen Entwicklungsverläufe seit 1990 unterscheiden lassen. Der Autor zeigt Ansätze auf, mit denen die Akteure auf die vielfältigen Veränderungen reagieren, und erläutert für die Siedlung zukünftige Aufgaben und Möglichkeiten. Im Kern stehen die ostdeutschen Großwohnsiedlungen vor einer neuen Entwicklungsphase, die stärker als bisher durch Altersarmut und zunehmender Segregation, d.h. von sozialen Aspekten, bestimmt sein wird.
