A Socket Shield Technique (SST) é um método inovador de implantologia que visa preservar a parede da raiz vestibular durante a extração, de modo a manter a arquitetura óssea e gengival, particularmente em áreas com elevados requisitos estéticos. Consiste na preservação de um fragmento de raiz vestibular intacto (o 'escudo') e na inserção de um implante imediatamente na posição palatina, sem contacto direto com o escudo. Esta técnica evita a reabsorção óssea vestibular e proporciona melhores resultados estéticos, nomeadamente ao nível dos tecidos moles. As vantagens incluem a conservação do volume alveolar, a estabilidade do contorno gengival e a redução da necessidade de enxertos ósseos. No entanto, as desvantagens da SST incluem a sua complexidade técnica, o risco de infeção ou mobilidade do escudo e a necessidade de formação específica. Está indicada para pacientes que necessitem de uma única extração na região anterior com uma parede vestibular intacta, na ausência de uma lesão infecciosa ativa. As limitações incluem raízes fracturadas, infecções graves, etc.
