O processo de orientação vocacional acompanha o ser humano desde a antiguidade, estando intimamente ligado às transformações sociais pelas quais a humanidade passou em sua história e respondendo diretamente à função do trabalho e à perceção dos atores sociais sobre as diversas profissões. Para um correto estudo do processo, é necessário recorrer a métodos como o histórico-lógico, que nos permite conceber as etapas pelas quais passou e os aspectos que foram ignorados pelos círculos hegemónicos do poder nas ciências, ignorando mesmo a criação em Cuba, em 1855, da Escola Preparatória Geral, para além da referência à matéria feita por José Martí a este respeito, através das suas intervenções em 1887 a propósito das nascentes escolas de artes e ofícios em várias nações latino-americanas.
