Um bebé prematuro é um bebé nascido vivo antes da 37ª semana a partir do primeiro dia da última menstruação (LMP). O parto prematuro é a causa mais comum de morte entre bebés em todo o mundo. A taxa de natalidade prematura foi estimada em cerca de 23% (variando de 5% em algumas partes da Europa a 18% em algumas partes da África), e cerca de 15 milhões de recém-nascidos nascem prematuros a cada ano. Deste total, 84% dos nascimentos prematuros ocorreram entre 32 e 36 semanas de idade gestacional (IG), 10% ocorreram entre 28 e menos de 32 semanas de IG e 5% ocorreram com menos de 28 semanas de IG, representando a maior percentagem do grupo de alto risco e o maior número de admissões nas Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos Neonatais (UCIN).Os recém-nascidos prematuros são um grupo altamente vulnerável da população. Os nascimentos prematuros são responsáveis pela maior taxa de mortalidade entre bebés no primeiro ano de vida.
