L’onomastica è lo studio dei nomi e dei sistemi di denominazione. La disciplina deriva dalla parola greca onoma che significa 'nome'. Nella maggior parte delle lingue del mondo i nomi sono scritti con la lettera maiuscola. Tutti questi fanno parte dell’onomastica. Le categorie sono molteplici e le più importanti sono le seguenti: antroponimia, cioè i nomi di persone. Si tratta di nomi, cognomi, soprannomi e nomi etnici. Sono tutti fortemente legati all’identità. Il primo è la toponomastica, cioè i nomi dei luoghi. Tutti i luoghi, siano essi strade, città o monumenti, portano un nome. Anche i nomi nell’economia, cioè i nomi dei marchi, costituiscono una categoria importante. Ci sono poi i nomi nella letteratura, cioè l’onomastica letteraria, così come i nomi di navi e di animali selvatici. L’onomastica è un campo di studio multidisciplinare impressionante, come questo libro illustra.
