A história do estado de Cochin, que serviu de zona tampão entre Travancore e o distrito britânico de Malabar, desempenhou um papel fundamental na história moderna de Kerala. A Companhia Inglesa das Índias Orientais tornou-se uma potência potencial em Cochin, mesmo durante o período de Saktan Tampuran Rama Varma (1729-1758), o arquiteto da Cochin moderna. Após a revolta de Velu Tampi Dalava (1801-1809, Diwan de Travancore), os funcionários ingleses começaram a observar com muito interesse as atividades dos Diwans de Cochin. As políticas centralizadoras do Coronel John Munro em Cochin e Travancore (1811-1815), na sua qualidade de Diwan e Residente destes estados, ajudaram muito a estabelecer o sistema administrativo britânico nestes dois estados nativos.No período pós-John Munro, Cochin nativo produziu apenas dois grandes Diwans, ou seja, Diwan Sankara Warrier (1840-1856) e seu filho Diwan Thottakat Sankunni Menon (1860-1879). Sankara Warrier assumiu o cargo de Diwan de Cochin. Em pouco tempo, o novo Diwan colocou as coisas no caminho certo, com o objetivo de corrigir os erros dos administradores anteriores. Na história dos Diwans da Índia do século XIX, Sankara Warrier ocupa um lugar de destaque como um primeiro-ministro exemplar e defensor do bem-estar do povo.
