Die Geschichte des Staates Cochin, der als Puffer zwischen Travancore und dem britischen Distrikt Malabar fungierte, spielte eine entscheidende Rolle in der modernen Geschichte Keralas. Die Englische Ostindien-Kompanie wurde bereits während der Regierungszeit von Saktan Tampuran Rama Varma (1729-1758), dem Architekten des modernen Cochin, zu einer potenziellen Macht in Cochin. Nach dem Aufstand von Velu Tampi Dalava (1801-1809, Diwan von Travancore) begannen die englischen Beamten, die Aktivitäten der Diwans von Cochin sehr genau zu beobachten. Die zentralistische Politik von Col. John Munro in Cochin und Travancore (1811-1815) in seiner Eigenschaft als Diwan und Resident dieser Staaten trug wesentlich zur Etablierung des britischen Verwaltungssystems in diesen beiden einheimischen Staaten bei.In der Zeit nach John Munro brachte das einheimische Cochin nur zwei große Diwans hervor, nämlich Diwan Sankara Warrier (1840-1856) und seinen Sohn Diwan Thottakat Sankunni Menon (1860-1879). Sankara Warrier trat innerhalb kurzer Zeit das Amt des Diwans von Cochin an. Der neue Diwan brachte die Dinge in die richtige Richtung, um die Fehler der früheren Verwalter zu korrigieren. In der Geschichte der Diwans Indiens im 19. Jahrhundert nimmt Sankara Warrier eine bemerkenswerte Stellung als vorbildlicher Premierminister des Volkes ein.
