O dióxido de carbono, cuja concentração no ar aumentou de 0,03 % para 0,04 % desde o início da era industrial, contribuiu para o crescimento da vegetação, do plâncton, das plantas nutritivas e para o aumento do rendimento das culturas. O benefício para a humanidade foi estimado em 3 biliões de dólares. Por que razão, então, o IPCC AR5 e a COP21 proclamam o carbono como o Inimigo Público Número 1? Por que razão reduzir as emissões de CO₂, um gás essencial e insubstituível para a vida vegetal? Por que razão combater o esverdeamento da Terra? O clima muda com períodos alternados de aquecimento e arrefecimento a cada 30 anos, conforme demonstrado pelos indicadores climáticos: gelo marinho, nível do mar, boias ARGO, temperatura média global medida desde 1880 e, com maior precisão, por satélites desde 1979. Uma vez subtraídos os ciclos naturais das observações, a contribuição antropogénica para as alterações climáticas surge bem abaixo de níveis perigosos, em consonância com estudos de infravermelhos sobre a absorção de gases com efeito de estufa e a mais recente sensibilidade climática publicada. A balança pende a favor do gás da vida, uma vez que o aquecimento moderado favorece o bem-estar humano, o crescimento e o progresso.
