O trabalho de Antônio Marques do Vale propoe-se a detectar o lugar da educação no conjunto da produção intelectual do ISEB (Instituto Superior de Estudos Brasileiros), entidade surgida efetivamente em 1955, com o fim de formular uma concepção da realidade social brasileira. O objetivo do trabalho é estudar somente os cinco autores ’históricos’, os que, provindos do anterior Instituto Brasileiro de Economia, Sociologia e Política (IBESP), estiveram presentes desde o primeiro momento da fundação do ISEB, exatamente os que foram escolhidos para diretor executivo e para dirigir departamentos. Eram eles: Roland Cavalcanti de Albuquerque Corbisier, Álvaro Vieira Pinto, Cândido Antônio Mendes de Almeida, Hélio Jaguaribe Gomes de Matos e Alberto Guerreiro Ramos.
