O estudo teve como objetivo identificar as características críticas dos compromissos de coaching para o desenvolvimento da liderança e o impacto desses compromissos nos CEOs de PMEs. Representa uma das poucas tentativas de examinar sistematicamente o impacto do coaching executivo nos CEOs de PMEs. Grande parte da literatura e das evidências destacam a crescente importância do coaching executivo como estratégia de desenvolvimento de liderança (Caruso 2000 e Passmore 2010) e validam que, quando combinado com programas de desenvolvimento, o coaching pode facilitar significativamente a aprendizagem e aumentar a autoeficácia dos indivíduos (Popper 2005; Levenson 2009; Hewes et al 2012; Atkinson 2012).
