A diabetes mellitus é a doença mais comum nos países desenvolvidos e em desenvolvimento, e está a aumentar rapidamente na maior parte do mundo. Estima-se que até um terço dos pacientes com diabetes mellitus utilizam alguma forma de medicina complementar e alternativa. A diabetes mellitus é uma doença crónica do metabolismo dos hidratos de carbono, lípidos e proteínas que contribui para vários tipos de complicações, incluindo a incapacidade reprodutiva masculina. Na verdade, a diabetes mellitus não controlada está frequentemente associada a disfunções sexuais e reprodutivas em homens e animais experimentais, sob a forma de esterilidade, disfunção erétil, redução da libido, alterações no sémen devido à diminuição dos níveis séricos de androgénios e comprometimento da espermatogênese. Este estudo foi concebido para avaliar o potencial efeito protetor/melhorador da administração de extrato de melão amargo nos danos testiculares.
