As fibras óticas planas de termoluminescência têm sido propostas como sensores de radiação em campos de radiação de alto fluxo, por exemplo, em reatores nucleares. São também utilizadas na dosimetria médica, tanto para aplicações de diagnóstico como de radioterapia. Assim, para esta investigação, foram selecionadas fibras óticas planas contendo sílica pura (SiO₂) e fibras óticas dopadas com boro (GeB). As fibras óticas planas propostas apresentam um comportamento de resposta linear à radiação admirável dentro da gama de doses relevantes para a medicina para todas estas energias, reprodutibilidade de alta qualidade, independência da energia de radiação e da taxa de dose, e exibem um desvanecimento térmico muito baixo. A partir destes resultados, as fibras óticas planas propostas podem ser utilizadas como dosímetro de radiação e comparam-se favoravelmente com o dosímetro TLD100 amplamente utilizado em aplicações de radioterapia médica.
