O cientista tem no seu barco um avançado laboratório onde inicia depois um processo de experiências infindáveis em que o cientista mata e ressuscita o pobre coitado um sem número de vezes, até que este faz uma descoberta macabra.Uma curta história que daria por si só um romance, mas que Jack London decidiu libertar da sua panóplia de contos rapidamente para seu ganha-pão, e para dar início à sua carreira de escritor. Consta que terá sido este o seu primeiro conto publicado ("A Thousand Deaths"), em 1899, na revista literária 'The Black Cat' com sede em Boston através da qual Jack London fez as suas primeiras publicações literárias.
