A aprendizagem autodidata (APD) surgiu como um objetivo educativo essencial. Este estudo investiga os esforços dos professores do ensino primário no sentido de encorajar a auto-aprendizagem, bem como os factores que a determinam a nível do professor, da turma e da escola. Os resultados mostram que a aprendizagem entre professores é apenas ligeiramente estimulada. Os professores que adoptam ideias educativas desenvolvimentistas e reconhecem a importância do ensino especial relatam mais práticas de ensino especial. Os professores dos anos de escolaridade mais elevados e com menos alunos também incluem o STL com mais frequência. A existência de uma perspetiva clara e unificada sobre o ensino especial é indicada como uma condição estimulante crucial a nível da escola. Os obstáculos mais significativos incluem a perceção das pressões de tempo e de trabalho, a diversidade dos alunos e a disponibilidade limitada dos professores para adaptarem a sua abordagem.
