El 16 de diciembre de 1996 mi familia sufrió el asesinato de uno de los suyos, en lo que podríamos considerar una masacre. El suceso fue divulgado de inmediato por los medios masivos de comunicación como noticia de última hora. Algunos de nosotros, por tal razón, nos enteramos de la tragedia a través de las imágenes transmitidas por los telenoticieros. Este hecho marcaría definitivamente no sólo el curso de nuestras vidas, sino el tipo de duelo que debimos soportar después, desencadenado en el momento mismo de la emisión y recepción de esas imágenes de violencia. En este trabajo de investigación pretendo llevar al lector, a través de esta experiencia familiar de la muerte violenta y de sus imágenes circuladas en los medios, a cuestionarse la forma, la utilidad y los mensajes del registro visual de la violencia cuando se hace noticia. 10
