The authors 'transcribed and compiled these polling lists to enable any one to quickly find out if an ancestor was a resident freeholder in Northumberland County, Virginia. The period covered is from 1750 to 1774. The voters listed in this transcription do not represent a complete census for the county, because some residents were not, by definition a freeholder. A freeholder is defined by the 1736 Virginia voting Law; to be any white male 21 years of age, who owns at least 100 acres of unimproved land or 25 acres with a house and plantation.' Polling lists are arranged as they appeared in the original record book; original spelling has been maintained. Researchers will also appreciate the table of voter names, arranged alphabetically by surname (using the 'most commonly used spelling'), which shows the local elections in which the voter participated. A full-name index adds to the value of this work.
