В Индии демонизация проводилась трижды. Первая была проведена 12 января 1946 года, вторая - 16 января 1978 года (понедельник) и третья - 8 ноября 2016 года (вторник). Есть и другие страны, которые также пробовали проводить демонетизацию: Нигерия, Гана, Пакистан, Зимбабве, Северная Корея, Советский Союз, Мьянма, Австралия и др. Индия хотела добиться значительного роста, приняв стратегию демонетизации, и создать огромное положительное влияние на всю экономику в долгосрочной перспективе. В январе 1946 года правительство при правлении англичан провело демонизацию банкнот номиналом 1 000 и 10 000 рупий. В 1954 году под руководством Неру правительство Индии ввело новые банкноты номиналом 1 000, 5 000 и 10 000 рупий. 16 января 1978 года при Морарджи Десаи коалиционное правительство Индии демонизировало банкноты номиналом 1 000, 5 000 и 10 000 рупий, чтобы бороться с фальшивой валютой и черными деньгами. По оценкам, в Индии один из самых высоких уровней валюты в обращении - более 12 % валового внутреннего продукта, и из этой наличности 87 % находится в виде банкнот номиналом 500 и 1000 рупий. Это общемировая практика.
