Lo scopo di questo lavoro è stato quello di studiare la vitalità del legno di Sclerolobium paniculatum Vogel e Qualea grandiflora Mart per la produzione di carbone di legna con caratteristiche favorevoli all’utilizzo nell’industria siderurgica. Sono stati utilizzati sette alberi di ciascuna specie del cerrado sensu strictu, dai quali sono stati prelevati dischi di 5 cm di spessore alla base del tronco di ciascun individuo, abbattuto a livello del suolo. Da ogni disco sono stati prelevati campioni di prova di 2,0 x 2,0 x 5,0 cm, nelle porzioni esterna, centrale e centrale. Le variabili valutate sono state: resa gravimetrica, contenuto di materiale volatile, contenuto di ceneri e contenuto di carbonio fisso nel carbone. I risultati hanno mostrato che Sclerolobium paniculatum Vogel e Qualea grandiflora Mart hanno ottenuto rese gravimetriche rispettivamente del 30% e del 26%. Inoltre, la qualità del carbone di queste specie ha mostrato un contenuto di materiale volatile del 26% e del 21% nella qualifica del carbone. La spettroscopia nel vicino infrarosso è stata utilizzata per prevedere la resa gravimetrica, i contenuti di materiale volatile, ceneri e carbonio fisso utilizzando il programma chemiometrico 'The Unscrambler®'.
