The development of college/university linked retirement communities on or near a campus has become a significant movement across the country. The motivation of older adults returning to campus is qualitatively different from those who choose traditional retirement communities. It is obvious that there is a hunger for something more than warm weather and a condo on the 5th green. It is fundamentally about personal growth, the development of new and more valued roles and an enabling culture that fosters the creation of new models for retirement.This book analyzes the characteristics and motivations of seniors who are attracted to such communities; the attributes of the environment that motivate and support purposive activities of senior residents and; the role colleges and universities are beginning to play in creating new models for retirement. It provides a conceptual framework of college/university linked retirement communities developing new models for retirement that should be especially useful to colleges and universities, professionals in senior housing and environment and aging fields, and older adults who would like to reinvent themselves in the new models of retirement.
