In dieser Arbeit wird die Umweltwahrnehmung der traditionellen Gemeinschaften untersucht, die im und um den Nationalpark Chapada das Mesas in der Gemeinde Carolina/MA leben. Für die Untersuchung wurde ein Formular mit 52 geschlossenen Fragen verwendet, das 40 Bewohnern vorgelegt wurde, wobei jeder befragte Haushalt einen Fragebogen erhielt. Die Gemeinden des Parks gelten als traditionell und sind von anderen sozialen Gruppen weit entfernt, fern von städtischen Gebieten, und bewahren ihre Kultur und Verbundenheit mit dem Gebiet, in dem sie leben. Zu den wirtschaftlichen Aktivitäten der Gemeinschaften gehören Subsistenzlandwirtschaft, Viehzucht und die Gewinnung von einheimischen Früchten zur Ergänzung des Familieneinkommens. Daraus lässt sich schließen, dass die Bewohner für Umweltfragen sensibilisiert sind und verstehen, dass die Einrichtung des Parks wichtig war, um die Abholzung zu verringern und die biologische Vielfalt zu erhalten.
