Les procédés d’oxydation avancés (AOP) sont définis comme des procédés qui impliquent la génération et l’utilisation de radicaux hydroxyles puissants mais relativement non sélectifs en quantités suffisantes pour pouvoir oxyder la majorité des produits chimiques complexes présents dans l’eau de l’effluent. Les radicaux hydroxyles (OH.) ont le potentiel d’oxydation le plus élevé (potentiel d’oxydation, E0 : 2,8 eV par rapport à l’électrode normale à hydrogène (NHE)) après le radical fluor. Le fluor, l’oxydant le plus puissant (potentiel d’oxydation, E0 : 3,06 V) ne peut pas être utilisé pour le traitement des eaux usées en raison de sa haute toxicité. Pour ces raisons, la génération de radicaux hydroxyles, y compris les AOP, a attiré l’attention de la plupart des scientifiques et des développeurs de technologies. La photocatalyse hétérogène appliquée dans des conditions naturelles d’altération, en présence de rayonnement solaire, montre une capacité de dégradation prometteuse. Ce livre met l’accent sur l’utilisation de la lumière solaire pour la dégradation des colorants à l’aide de nanophotocatalyseurs.
