La nanotecnologia è un importante campo di ricerca moderna e una particella è definita come un piccolo oggetto che si comporta come un’unità intera in termini di trasporto e proprietà. L’argento è un elemento salutare nel sistema di medicina tradizionale cinese e ayurvedica indiana. La diversità biologica può quindi essere utilizzata come una risorsa importante per prodotti e processi biotecnologici, che possono essere adatti per la sintesi su larga scala. Oggigiorno, c’è una crescente necessità di sviluppare processi ecocompatibili, che non utilizzino sostanze chimiche tossiche nei protocolli di sintesi. Gli approcci di sintesi verde includono poliossometalati a valenza mista, polisaccaridi, Tollens, metodi biologici e di irradiazione che presentano vantaggi rispetto ai metodi convenzionali che coinvolgono agenti chimici associati alla tossicità ambientale. Il vantaggio principale dell’uso di estratti vegetali per la sintesi di nanoparticelle d’argento è che sono facilmente reperibili, sicuri e non tossici nella maggior parte dei casi, hanno un’ampia varietà di metaboliti che possono aiutare nella riduzione degli ioni d’argento e sono più rapidi dei microbi nella sintesi.
