I nanomateriali di carbonio (CNM), come le nanofibre di carbonio (CNF), i nanotubi di carbonio a parete multipla (MWCNT) e i nanorodi di carbonio (CNR), hanno trovato diverse applicazioni industriali e commerciali. In ambito lavorativo, questi MWCNT, CNF e CNR possono essere rilasciati nell’ambiente circostante sotto forma di aerosol. Il potenziale meccanismo dei pericoli legati all’inalazione di questi MWCNT è sconosciuto. Il libro ha valutato la tossicità di questi CNM utilizzando una combinazione di studi in vitro e in vivo con livelli di dose rilevanti. L’esposizione di tre tipi di CNM al carbonio a diverse cellule ha prodotto una citotossicità dipendente dalla concentrazione, in vitro. Gli studi in vivo sui ratti hanno rivelato granulomi multifocali dose-dipendenti e citotossicità o necrosi degli alveoli che hanno portato alla tossicità polmonare. I risultati hanno evidenziato una riduzione significativa dei livelli di antiossidanti enzimatici e non enzimatici. I risultati suggeriscono che l’aumento dell’utilizzo dei ROS è un importante fattore che contribuisce alla riduzione delle concentrazioni di antiossidanti nei ratti esposti al CNM. Sono necessarie ulteriori indagini per chiarire i possibili meccanismi coinvolti nella genotossicità indotta dal CNM.
