A previsão da forma como as proteínas se dobram e se adsorvem às superfícies é um problema complexo de grande relevância para os sectores da saúde e do ambiente. No entanto, a compreensão da adsorção de proteínas é complicada devido a muitos factores: deteção celular e sinalização intercelular, topografia da superfície e citoesqueleto. Por conseguinte, os estudos exclusivamente com proteínas são valiosos para investigar a formação de biofilmes, as doenças de condensação de proteínas e a toxicidade dos nanomateriais. Este livro apresenta uma investigação sistemática da adsorção de proteínas em películas finas de carbono amorfo hidrogenado (a-C:H) nano-padronizadas. A primeira metade trata da preparação e análise de padrões de a-C:H por fresagem de feixe de iões focados (FIB) e nanoindentação por microscopia de força atómica (AFM). A segunda parte investiga a adsorção de proteínas em quatro sistemas diferentes de proteína/solvente. Os resultados mostraram que as superfícies modelo nano-padronizadas são úteis para estudar e controlar a adsorção de proteínas, enquanto os métodos desenvolvidos podem ser alargados a outras técnicas de padronização e sistemas de proteínas para estudar independentemente a influência da topografia e da composição na adsorção de proteínas.
