Исследование разнообразия и распределения средних крупных млекопитающих проводилось в Национальном заповеднике Помене с целью изучения разнообразия и распределения видов средних крупных млекопитающих в трех биотопах (густой миомбо, открытый миомбо и кустарниковая прерия) РНП. Для сбора данных прямым методом все наблюдательные тропы в каждом местообитании были пройдены пешком утром и в конце дня. Длина каждой тропы составляла 2 км, и как только в радиусе 1 км от наблюдателей наблюдалось стадо, определялся вид, подсчитывалось общее количество особей каждого вида и фиксировалась географическая координата местонахождения. При использовании косвенного метода для сбора образцов ночных животных были случайным образом установлены 16 трансектов длиной 1000 метров и диаметром 100 метров на расстоянии 500 метров друг от друга. На каждом трансекте виды идентифицировались по их следам (фекалиям и отпечаткам ног), и регистрировалось общее количество особей каждого вида.
